Did you know women held leadership positions in Iran before the 1979 revolution??
Welcome to Part 5 of our limited series, A Contested History of Iran.
The first thing the Khomeini did after establishing the Islamic Republic is remove women from positions of power and strip women of all agency by enforcing mandatory hijab and restricting women's rights in terms of travel, education, family law and bodily autonomy.
This laid the foundation of Gender Apartheid, a systemic discrimination against women codified in law. Women protested then, women protest now. We want an end to the Islamic Regime in Iran. We want a free society for all people.
